Hey there
I have just moved to Fedora 12 after using ubuntu from Hoary 5.04.
It was a small bit more effort to get fedora to the point that I usually have ubuntu on a fresh install. Main one was the restricted drivers for nvidia, having to remove nouveau or blacklist it in fstab rdblacklist=nouveau
Stuff like this would not be needed in ubuntu:
su -
mv /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r)-nouveau.img
dracut /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img $(uname -r)

But as long as one kind find the info on fedoraforums its ok, as they really on into Floss, so wont make propriety blobs easy :)

But that only took a few minutes, so was no real bother for the 6-13 months I will use Fedora 12 ;)

I also run Ubuntu from the Alphas into Release, while testing a few of the big players betas/releases and also some of the better small ones like: Suse, fedora, Arch, Sidux, debian Sid, Mepis 8 RC, Mint etc.

If I was to play with Ubuntu/Debian based distro, it would be Mint 8 by Clem, he seems to be the new Texstar ;) That is also sitting on a partition and will be used if a blow up my fedora 12 install.

(pclinuxos was great a few years back, but their forums where hijacked by some psychos and Tex seemed to run out of motivation soon there after in any-case, so ubuntu was then a perfect fit)

Yum is not as good as apt, esp as the autoremove, debfoster, deborphan parts are not on par ye, but hell they have made good progress catching up, no denying that for yum/fedora.
Not a train smash to have a few dependencies remain when something is removed.

I am also finding I am wanting more stability now, so don't purposefully mess the system around here like I was in Ubuntu adding PPA as fast as they got a mention somewhere :)

I have wanted to move to Fedora since hearing a interview with Paul Frields a while back, but there was always something that did not work like I needed until Fedora 12.

WOW, it really is a excellent release this time!

Lets see how long we can make it here ;)

(I will also install Lucid Alpha on 10 dec, but for now my stable partition is F12 on OCZ 120G Vertex SSD = Heaven)

I will always play with Ubuntu too, but fedora seems to be doing more for upstream, so its a place I need to try be for now.
http://tinyurl.com/kulu4q

I wonder if the Distros will ever move to the 12 month release cycle, launchpad is so full of bg reports, they just cant keep up any more, yet the releases just keep coming. Hopefully with Fedora working much closer with upstream devs, their 6 months cycle will cope better. I do feel 6 months in retrospect was forced by Ubuntu and may have made for buggy release all round now?

Any way, we seem to have taken the jump at the same time, so Good Luck!

I understand where you are comin from. I was turned onto Linux by force. (BF decided Vista Sucked) Erased ALL my sims data and went to Ubuntu. I can't count how many distros we've been through looking for one hard enough to satisfy his nerdy needs. But my favorite to date is Arch. He installed it We had it for a while. then he changed it. :( I've found alot of the Distros are easy to use and most were user friendly. It's just a little different wath each one. And if you do have a problem, there are other people out there who have gone through the same thing. Yeah sometimes the Unix guru does show up, but most of them do have an understanding of how it felt to be a n00b at one point. I'd rather have a guru tell me what to do to fix a problem anyway. The point is I'd never go back to windows if you paid me. If you don't like how the distro works for you change it. Make it your own. However we havn't been back to Ubutu after Jaunty. I didn't like it & I suspect he didn't either.

Actually it is based on BSD. Linux and Mac Os are cousins rather than siblings or parent-child. Both Linux and BSD based on Unix. They have some similarities, but OS/X is a proprietary OS that is DRM laden which has nothing in common with FOSS.

Printer drivers, especially from Canon,
Are compiled or processed when installed.
And they will almost always report makefile errors.
And never hint where the makefile is.
Good luck looking for enough clues to solve that error, and there is another bunch of makefile errors as well in store for many others.

Not that windows does not have its own serious problems.

Maybe there really *isn't* a ready-for-prime-time OS out there.
