Reading your weblog was like looking in a mirror! My interest in Linux only started after reading an article in NewScientist (UK) back in '97. But since the I have also been a complete distro whore. I have fond memories of my ZX81 and the early excitement and hope for computing. Linux started this anew.
From one whore to another (whisper) 'Kubuntu 9.04 jaunty' - is this the one !

PCLinuxOS is a good choice. It is a fork in Mandriva. Texstar the founder of PCLinuxOS was a package manager for Mandrake, now Mandriva. He has produced a first rate distro. It has great hardware detection and some of the Mandriva tools.

If you were using hardy heron then I am not surprised with bugs. It is still in alpha testing and you should never judge a distro by experimental releases. Even Gutsy released in October is more recent than PCLinuxOS. Keep that in mind.

I am using a Ubuntu release called Ultimate Ubuntu. It is worth a look provided you have a broadband connection. It is about a 2 GB download. Best of luck!

Well it seems you have dug deep in the linux well. I on the other hand is relatively new to the linux world and have not used many distros. I fell in love with ubuntu early but is lately falling out. To many bugs in Kubuntu and Ubuntu doesn't do it for me anymore. I am experimenting with Mandriva 2008 after a failed upgrade to hardy, it seems to be much cleaner but I already feel that I will break it soon. After reading this page I will look into PCLinuxOS and PCLOS Gnome Edition. I prefer the debian based distros as I am running into walls with rpm. Never have I manually installed sudo.
